I think the usual method to make open innovation happen is to make use of either the range of Open Innovation websites such as Innocentive, Nine Sigma and yet2.com to post your problem or to engage a technology broker to survey a broad range of technology areas for appropriate solutions. Another option is to make use of TRIZ tools to identify solution from other industries to solve your problem. But a point Bettina makes here is how this type of innovation would enable hither to unseen avenues to be explored for an organization.
