A logic puzzle for you

July 13th, 2008 | Category: A bit of fun

I though I would tantalise you a little by setting you a small logic puzzle in my blog. This¬†puzzle is aimed at all the engineers and scientists out there but I guess¬†anyone who prides themselves on some clear logical thought processes should be in with a shout too. Anyway here goes…

“You have a house with a room illuminated by a single light bulb. The light bulb can be turned on and off at any one of three light switches, independent of the positions of the other two switches. What is the electrical circuit diagram for the switches and light bulb?”

I hope that’s clear enough. It’s pretty simple to work out really, once you key into the right thinking tools. I’ll let this one run for a couple of weeks and see how you get on. If you like it, I’ve got more where this came from. If you don’t like it, we’ll brush it under the carpet and forget it ever happened.

Innovation Gone Wrong

June 30th, 2008 | Category: A bit of fun

I happened on this blog earlier today and I was amazed by some of the innovative thinking. How about fighting lobsters, dog sweaters and wigs for cats.¬†Most recent post was for a smell cell – that’s right a cell phone that emits odour; I wonder what the consumer insight was for that one? Anyway,¬†Innovation Gone Wrong certainly amused me somewhat and I’ll be back for a look before long. OK, it’s not serious, it might even be described as a bit flippant, but¬†then sometimes¬†innovation can and should be fun (he said earnestly). Anyway I think it will go on the blogroll too.

Stick man cartoon

June 22nd, 2008 | Category: A bit of fun

I found this stick man cartoon yesterday and it provided a bit of unexpected entertainment so I thought I would post it. I actually thought it was quite creative and innovative in the way it used the animation technology. It is well worth a look.

My daughter drew my attention to this mysterious new feline development. It appears that a cat has discovered te secret of flight…

It’s kind of mystical.

44 surprising things you can eat and indigestion

Hmm… have you ever considered eating your chair, or perhaps using a deodorant which you eat rather than apply to your skin? These products and another 42 others are listed on the trendhunter website. Some other dishes you might be tempted by include:

an edible FIAT Panda car advert

an ingestible robot (yummy)

an edible menu

edible shoe cream (now why didn’t I think of that?)

and finally….

ingestible silver pills for 24 hours of sparkly poo

The Trendhunter website talks a good fight, but I got a sinking feeling when I started to review some of the content, you know the feeling, a bit like when you’ve eaten something which didn’t really agree with you. Anyone for cardboard bicycles and MP3 doorbells? Who said these were the start of anything apart from a headache? OK I won’t give up on it right away, you’ve got to give these things a chance, even though I object to the rumbly feeling I get when I try to digest something that has been hyped like¬†Trendhunter has.

Right now though I would say that trendwatching is a far better place to find out about up and coming consumer trends. I’ll keep you posted.

Innovation lifecycle and an annoying quiz

June 13th, 2008 | Category: A bit of fun

I found this cartoon on Metropolitan State College of Denver Innovation website. The website is just kicking off and provided more than a few minutes of fun as well as some serious stuff. The cartoon shows some of the ways innovation can go wrong – I’m sure you can all list¬†many, many more options¬†to snatch¬†disaster from the jaws of victory during the evolution of a new product from initial idea to final market offering. Actually, given the many different factors which can potentially eat into the apple, the job that strong innovators do to keep ideas on track should be roundly applauded. Incidentally, on the same site was a link to possibly the most infuriating quiz I have ever tried. It went on and on and, unfortunately for me, it was totally addictive. I finally got to question 34 and realised that I do have a life to lead. While I was repeatedly failing to complete the quiz, various family members came in to find out what all the screaming was about. Anyway, I think it might be a great tool for breaking¬†down psychological inertia and the like. It annoyed me quite a lot more than somewhat, so don’t say I didn’t warn you. If you would like yo¬†have a go and annoy yourself silly too, just click on this rather unpreposessing link. I take no responsibility for any self harm or voilence to others that may ensue.
