What is TRIZ?

TRIZ is a Russian acronym which stands for the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving. TRIZ was founded on an extensive study of the world patent database made by a Russian inventor, Genrich Altshuller, and his team of researchers.

Altshuller recognised that the development of any technical system is not random, but follows predictable lines of evolution. TRIZ is based on three main axioms:

  • All technological systems evolve according to objective laws, so called Laws of Technological System Evolution
  • In order to generate inventive solutions and evolve a technological system, it is necessary to break through the compromises or “trade-offs” we often feel compelled to make (i.e. where one important parameter of a system can be improved only at the expense of another important parameter)
  • The specific situation in which the problem exists and the resources available in that problem situation will determine the most effective evolved solution to the problem
  • Within TRIZ are a number of very powerful systematic inventive tools and processes which can help you to unlock and solve your toughest technological challenges. TRIZ is used successfully by many leading innovative organisations around the world including Samsung, Intel, GE and Proctor and Gamble.
